UUCCV Schedule for July
Sunday, July 4 – 9:30 a.m. Adult Forum: “Open Season” for any and all questions about the Bible.
Sunday, July 4 – 11:00 a.m. The service topic will be “What Does ‘Freedom’ Mean in 2010?” Rev. Bob will kick off this Independence Day discussion with a short homily, then we will look at Liberty, Democracy and Freedom. Is there a difference? Have meanings changed in the last 234 years?
Friday, July 9 – 7:00 p.m. UUCCV at the Crawdads Baseball Game. See Rev. Bob for tickets.
Saturday, July 10 – 2:00 p.m. Memorial Service for Lynette Riddle at UUCCV (see separate article on front page)
Sunday, July11 – No Adult Forum
Sunday, July11 – The 11:00 a.m. Worship Service will be our annual “request sermon” Sunday. Rev. Bob’s topic, based on a suggestion from Julie Cline, will be “Are the laws of God equal to the Laws of Science.” A recent article in the UU World suggested, among other things, that mathematics may be considered by some to be a language of God. This will be a new UU look at the age old battle between religion and science.
Sunday, July 18 – No Adult RE Forum.
Sunday, July 18 – 11:00 a.m. – “The Road Less Traveled” will be the subject for guest ministers Michael Carter and Judith Long. They will explore the universal dimensions of faith journeys and how we find meaning at the various points along these journeys. Part of spiritual maturing is exploring one’s unique perspective on how the universe works. If one’s path is more traditional, the exploration can be easier. However, if one’s path is nontraditional then the journey can be more challenging as well as magical and adventurous, like any path that takes one on the road less traveled.
Sunday, July 25 – 11:00 a.m. Worship Service – Rev. Bob’s subject will be “Charles Darwin’s vision of human society’s evolution.” Did Darwin believe that human society would evolve, and if so, to include what? A recent article in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Society, suggests that Darwin did have such a vision, and that humankind does not seem to be living up to Darwin’s expectations. So what does this have to do with us today, and with our spiritual journeys?
Coming on Sunday, August 1 – Rev. Wyman Rousseau returns to UUCCV after an absence of some 10 years.
